Push notifications with Firebase without code

Push notifications with Firebase in nana800 are sent by the send push notification block: it passes a title, text and your data to Firebase Cloud Messaging, and Firebase delivers the notification to the phone of your app user. You need a Firebase service account JSON key and the FCM token of the device, and the scheme itself needs no code. One notification costs $0.001.

What you can do

  • Tell app users about a new order, a payment, a message or a status change
  • Send reminders on a schedule or at an exact time
  • Pass your own key and value data with the notification, for example an order number for the app
  • Send notifications with the default sound on Android and iPhone
  • Take the FCM token from a webhook, a sheet or a database where your app sends it

Blocks in the builder

  • send push notification

    Action · $0.001 per run

Sends a notification with a title, text and extra data through Firebase Cloud Messaging to one device by its FCM token. Returns success_sent, and error_text with the Firebase answer on failure.

How to set it up

  1. 1

Download a Firebase service account key

In the Firebase console open Project settings, the Service accounts tab, and click Generate new private key. You get a JSON file, and the block needs its whole content. The key gives access to your Firebase project, so keep it secret.

  2. 2

Get the FCM token of the device

The FCM token is the address of one device in Firebase, and your app gets it from the Firebase SDK. To let the scheme know where to send, the app or your server passes the token to nana800, for example with a request to a webhook trigger, or stores it in a sheet or a database.

  3. 3

    Add the push notification block

Create a scheme with the trigger you need and add the send push notification block. Paste the JSON file content into firebase admin config and the device token into fcm token, then fill in title and text. Use data props to add key and value pairs for the app.

  4. 4

Turn the scheme on and test it

For a test, paste the token of your own phone, turn the scheme on and run it with the button trigger. If no notification arrives, open the block result: error_text holds the Firebase answer. When it works, keep the scheme on. It costs $0.0042 per hour while on.

Frequently asked questions

One notification costs $0.001 and is charged only if Firebase accepted it. An enabled scheme costs $0.0042 per hour. Your balance is topped up to $3.50 for free every month, no card needed. A scheme kept on around the clock for a month spends most of that on scheme hours.

The app must be connected to Firebase Cloud Messaging and get the FCM token of each device. nana800 does the sending, but adding Firebase to the app and passing the tokens is a job for your developer.

No, one block run sends a notification to one device by one FCM token. Sending to topics or to a list of tokens is not available in the block.

Yes, if your iPhone app receives notifications through Firebase Cloud Messaging, which means an Apple APNs key is added in Firebase. The block sends notifications with the default sound to both Android and iPhone.

Open the block result: error_text holds the Firebase answer. Common causes are an outdated FCM token, a token from another Firebase project, or an incomplete JSON in the firebase admin config field. Paste the key in full, including the curly braces.
