Text to speech without code: OpenAI and ElevenLabs voices

Text to speech in nana800 takes one block of the same name: it sends your text to OpenAI or ElevenLabs, saves the audio file in your project and returns a link to it. All you need is an API key of the chosen service, with no code. A block run costs $0.002, and the voice service bills the speech itself on your own plan.

How to set it up

    Choose a service and get a key

    OpenAI: open API keys in your OpenAI account, click Create new secret key and add funds. ElevenLabs: open Settings, API Keys, create a key with Text to Speech access, then pick a voice under Voices and click Copy voice ID.

    Create a scheme with a trigger

    Add a trigger that brings the text: a message to your Telegram bot, a webhook from your website or a schedule. For a first test the button trigger is enough.

    Set up the speech block

    Add the Text to speech block, choose openai or elevenlabs in the service field and paste the key. Type the text or take it from the trigger. For OpenAI pick a model and a voice. For ElevenLabs paste the voice ID and pick a model.

    Send the file on

    Put file_url from the result into the next block. For example, choose the document type in Telegram message send and the bot sends the audio file. All created files appear in the project file list, where you can delete them.

    Turn the scheme on and test it

    Turn the scheme on, press the button, open the block result and play the file from the link. If there is no file, error_message explains why: a wrong key, no voice with that ID, or no characters left on your plan. When it works, keep the scheme on. It costs $0.0042 per hour while on.

Frequently asked questions

A block run in nana800 costs $0.002 and is charged only when the file is created. OpenAI or ElevenLabs bill the speech itself on your plan with them. An enabled scheme costs $0.0042 per hour. Your nana800 balance is topped up to $3.50 for free every month, no card needed. A scheme kept on around the clock for a month spends most of that on scheme hours.

OpenAI voices sound best in English, and gpt-4o-mini-tts follows delivery instructions. For other languages ElevenLabs is the safer choice, for example eleven_multilingual_v2. Note that OpenAI will turn off gpt-4o-mini-tts, tts-1 and tts-1-hd on January 6, 2027, after that ElevenLabs remains for speech.

OpenAI takes up to 4096 characters per block run, so split longer text across several blocks. ElevenLabs limits depend on the model: from 5000 to 40000 characters.

In ElevenLabs open Voices, pick a voice, click the three dots button and Copy voice ID. The block needs the ID, like 21m00Tcm4TlvDq8ikWAM, not the voice name. The voice must be available to your account.

With OpenAI, yes: speed is a number from 0.25 to 4, where 1 is normal. Delivery instructions such as speak warmly and calmly work only with the gpt-4o-mini-tts model. With ElevenLabs the sound depends on the chosen voice and model.
