Forward Gmail to Telegram: alerts for every new email

To forward Gmail to Telegram, nana800 checks your Inbox once a minute and sends a Telegram message with the sender, subject and text of every new email. To sign in, a Gmail address and an app password are enough, or you can connect Google OAuth instead. No code is needed, and your balance is topped up to $3.50 for free every month.

What you can automate

  • Get a private message for every new email: who sent it, the subject and the start of the text
  • Forward only the emails you need: from a specific client, with "order" in the subject, or with a certain label, using Gmail search
  • Send emails with leads to a team group so none of them gets lost
  • Summarize a long email in two or three lines with a ChatGPT block before it goes to Telegram
  • See in the message whether the email has attachments, with their names, sizes and types

How to set it up

  1. 1

Create a bot and find the chat ID

Create a bot with @BotFather using /newbot and copy the token. Press Start in your bot, otherwise it cannot message you. @getmyid_bot shows your ID. For a team group, add the bot to it and use the group ID, which starts with -100.

  2. 2

    Prepare access to Gmail

The simpler way: in your Google account open Security, then 2-Step Verification and App passwords, and create a password. The other way is Google OAuth, which needs the client ID and client secret of an app in Google Cloud Console and a refresh token with Gmail access.

  3. 3

    Add the Gmail trigger

Create a scheme or start from the ready Gmail to Telegram template. In the gmail incoming email trigger enter the Gmail address, pick APP_PASSWORD_IMAP or OAUTH_CLIENT and fill in its fields. The search field takes a filter such as from:client@example.com, an empty field means all emails.

  4. 4

    Set up the Telegram message

In the Telegram message send block paste the bot token and the chat ID. Put the from, subject and snippet fields of the trigger into the text: sender, subject and start of the email. Pick the plain_text format. The full text from body_text may not fit, because Telegram rejects messages over 4096 characters.

  5. 5

Turn the scheme on and test it

Turn the scheme on and send yourself a test email. The first check only remembers the emails already in the Inbox, so old ones do not arrive. The alert for a new email comes with the next check. An enabled scheme costs $0.0042 per hour.

Frequently asked questions

Every new email costs three basic block runs: the Gmail trigger counts as two and the Telegram message as one. 1,000 basic runs cost $1, and checks with no new email are free. An enabled scheme costs $0.0042 per hour and only checks mail while it is on, so a scheme kept on around the clock spends most of the free $3.50 a month on scheme hours.

An app password is quicker: you only need the Gmail address and a password created under App passwords in your Google account, with 2-Step Verification turned on. Google OAuth fits if you already have an app in Google Cloud Console: then you need its client ID, client secret and a refresh token with Gmail access.

Type a query into the search field of the trigger the same way you would in the Gmail search bar: from:boss@example.com, subject:(report) or label:unread. Only matching emails start the scheme. An empty field means every new email in the Inbox.

No. The first check only remembers the emails that are already there and does not start the scheme. Emails older than three days, for example ones that arrived while the scheme was off, are skipped too. If more than 300 emails arrive in a minute, the rest are handled in the next checks.

Not the files themselves. With include attachments turned on, the trigger returns a list of them: file name, size and type. You can put this list into the message to see right away that the email has a file.

The trigger checks the Inbox once a minute, so the message is not instant: it comes with the first check after Gmail shows the email. It only watches the Inbox, so emails that Gmail filters move straight to the archive do not start the scheme.
