RSS to Telegram channel: new posts from a site, blog or YouTube

RSS to Telegram channel posting in nana800 takes two blocks: the first watches an RSS or Atom feed, the second publishes every new item to a channel, group or private chat. Feeds of news sites, blogs, podcasts and YouTube channels work, checked anywhere from every 5 minutes to once a day. No code is needed, only a bot from @BotFather, and your balance is topped up to $3.50 for free every month.

What you can automate

  • Post every new article of your blog or website to the channel with its title, a short description and a link
  • Send new videos of a YouTube channel to a channel or group through its RSS feed
  • Collect industry or competitor news from several feeds in one team group, with one trigger per feed
  • Add a Read button under the post that opens the item on the website
  • Post with the picture of the item when the feed provides pictures

How to set it up

  1. 1

    Find the feed address

Websites usually give it behind an RSS icon, or at the site address followed by /feed or /rss. YouTube channels have feeds too, built from the channel ID, and the field hint shows an example. Open the address in a browser: it should show XML text, not a regular page.

  2. 2

Prepare the bot and the channel

Create a bot with @BotFather using /newbot and copy the token. Add the bot to your channel as an admin allowed to post messages. For a public channel its @name is enough. For a private one @getmyid_bot shows the ID, which starts with -100.

  3. 3

    Add the feed trigger

Create a scheme and add the RSS feed new item trigger. Paste the feed address and choose how often to check it, from 5 minutes up to 1440 minutes, which is once a day. The default is every 15 minutes. Below you can set how many new items one check handles, from 1 to 50.

  4. 4

    Build the post

Add the Telegram message send block and paste the token and the channel name or ID. Put the title, description_text and link fields of the trigger into the text and pick the plain_text format. For a Read button, fill the buttons field like the example in its hint and use link from the trigger as the address.

  5. 5

Turn the scheme on and check the bot

To make sure the bot can post to the channel, add the button trigger, turn the scheme on and press the button. The first check only remembers the items already in the feed, so old posts do not flood the channel. An enabled scheme costs $0.0042 per hour.

Pricing

A run of a RSS block costs $0.001, a run of a Telegram block costs $0.001. Every month the balance is topped up to $3.50 for free, an enabled scheme costs $0.0042 per hour.

Frequently asked questions

Every new item costs two basic block runs: the feed trigger and the Telegram message. 1,000 basic runs cost $1, and checks with no new items are free. An enabled scheme costs $0.0042 per hour and only checks the feed while it is on, so a scheme kept on around the clock spends most of the free $3.50 a month on scheme hours.

With the next feed check. You choose how often: every 5, 10, 15 or 30 minutes, every hour, every 3, 6 or 12 hours, or once a day. A feed cannot be checked more often than every 5 minutes.

No. The first check only remembers the items that are already there, and this repeats after you change the feed address. After that each new item is posted once. If there are more new items than the setting allows (10 by default), the rest go out in the next checks, oldest first.

RSS and Atom feeds of websites, blogs, podcasts and YouTube channels. The feed must be reachable from the internet and weigh no more than 10 MB. Internal network addresses such as localhost or 192.168.0.10 are not supported.

The description field holds the description in HTML. Use description_text instead: it is the same description as plain text and fits a Telegram message. The full text in the content field is HTML too, and it is often longer than the 4096 characters Telegram accepts.

Yes, if the feed items have pictures. In the send block pick the photo type and put image_url from the trigger into the file field, and the text becomes a caption of up to 1024 characters. When an item has no picture the message is not sent, so keep the text type for feeds without pictures.
