RSS to VK: autopost new articles to a community wall

RSS to VK autoposting in nana800 takes two blocks: a trigger checks the feed of a website, blog or YouTube channel, and the VK block publishes every new item as a post on your community wall with its title, link and image. No code is needed, but according to the VK docs wall posts need a user key with the wall and photos rights. Your balance is topped up to $3.50 for free every month, no card needed.

What you can automate

  • Post every new article of your website or blog to your community: the title, a short description and a link to the article
  • Bring new videos of a YouTube channel to your VK community through the RSS feed of the channel
  • Attach the image from the feed to the post: the block downloads it by link and uploads it to VK
  • Collect news from several websites in one community, with a separate RSS trigger for each feed
  • Rewrite the teaser with a YandexGPT or ChatGPT block before posting, so the post does not copy the website text word for word

How to set it up

  1. 1

    Find the RSS feed address

A website usually shows its feed behind an RSS icon, or it lives at the site address ending in /feed or /rss. A YouTube channel has a feed too, and the trigger field hint shows its address with the channel ID. Open the address in a browser: a real feed shows XML text, not a regular web page.

  2. 2

Get a VK access key for the wall

According to the VK docs, wall posts and wall photo uploads need a user key with the wall and photos rights, which VK grants to an app on request to its developer support. You can try a community key first: Manage, API usage, Access tokens, Create token. If VK answers with error 27 or 15, you need a user key.

  3. 3

    Add the RSS trigger

Create a scheme in the builder and add the RSS feed new item trigger. Paste the feed address and choose how often to check it: from every 5 minutes to once a day, every 15 minutes by default.

  4. 4

Set up the post in the VK block

Add the VK block, paste the key and choose the wall_post operation. Put the community ID with a minus sign into the wall ID field, for example -123456789, and keep posting on behalf of the community set to true. Put title and description_text from the trigger into the text, link into ready attachments and image_url into photo links.

  5. 5

Check the key with a test post

To avoid waiting for a new article, build a test scheme: the button trigger and a VK block with any text. Turn it on and press the button: the block result shows a link to the post, and if VK refuses, the error_message field holds the error code and text. The button itself is free, and you can turn the test scheme off after the check.

  6. 6

    Turn the scheme on

The first check only remembers the items already in the feed, so the archive of your website does not flood the community. The first post comes with the first new item in the feed. While the scheme is on, it costs $0.0042 per hour.

Frequently asked questions

Checks of the feed with no new items are free. Every new item costs three basic block runs: the RSS trigger counts as one and the post in the VK block as two, with all its photos. 1,000 basic runs cost $1. An enabled scheme costs $0.0042 per hour, so a scheme kept on around the clock spends most of the free $3.50 a month on scheme hours.

According to the VK docs, wall posts and wall photos need a user key with the wall and photos rights. VK grants these rights to an app on request to its developer support. The docs do not mention a community key for the wall: you can try one, and if VK answers with error 27 or 15, you need a user key.

The first check only remembers the items already in the feed and posts nothing, so the whole archive of the website is not published. The post comes with the first check after a new item appears in the feed. The same happens after you change the feed address.

You choose in the trigger: every 5, 10, 15, 30 or 60 minutes, every 3, 6 or 12 hours, or once a day. If many new items appear at once, one check publishes no more posts than the set number, 10 by default, from oldest to newest. The rest go out with the next checks.

Every feed item starts the scheme only once, even after a server restart: the trigger recognizes it by guid, id or link. If a request to VK repeats after a network failure, the block sends a unique post code with it, so no second post appears.

Yes. Put image_url from the trigger into the photo links field: the block downloads the image and uploads it to VK, JPG, PNG or GIF up to 50 MB. If the feed has no image, the post goes out without a photo. Put the article link into ready attachments, a post can hold one link.
